What is it?
Gender identity focuses on a person’s own sense of gender. One may identify with their assigned sex, or it may differ. Societal expectations and stereotypes can make it challenging for one to be their true self. As a result, it can impact your relationships, work, and mental health. It is important to focus on how you view yourself and what gender means to you. You can express this identity in different ways like labels, appearance, and dress.
Gender Identity vs. Sexual Identity
Gender identity is how you experience your gender. But identity can be more than just male or female. When speaking about gender identity it can be viewed as a spectrum. Not everyone is the same and they are not locked into one label.
Sexual identity is about who you are attracted to or want to have a relationship with. Sexuality is something that can change over time.
Understanding yourself in all aspects takes time. Your gender and sexual identity are specific to you. There is no box you must fit in to. We are all unique! We have our own experiences, and feelings that help shape who we are.
