Boundaries are important. They exist to keep you and others safe. For example, they may be physical, mental, or emotional. When creating boundaries, it is important to reflect on what you need. Keep in mind that these can shift and change. As we go through life experiences we evolve, and that means we may need to reflect on what boundaries are still serving us and if we need to create new ones.
Types of boundaries
- Rigid:
- Saying “no” to everything
- Avoiding intimacy
- Keep everyone at a distance
- Unlikely to ask for help
- Weak:
- Difficulty saying no
- Dependent on opinions of others
- Oversharing of personal info
- Say yes to everything
With this idea in mind, you can try out an art activity to get create juices flowing. Often times a visual representation brings an increased self-awareness of your thoughts and feelings. You don’t have to be great at art or super creative. The experience is here to provide you an opportunity of reflection and fun.
Art Experiential for Boundaries
Materials Needed:
Piece of Paper
Felt Markers
Pencil crayons
Colored pencils
Oil pastels
OR any other materials you would like
Directive:
First, you want to create space and set your intention for this experience.
Next, you will reflect on your boundaries. Journal about them and focus on how you would want to feel if healthy ones were in place.
After, draw your most empowered self. What does it feel like in your body? Start by putting yourself in the center of the page. What colors and images show up? What materials would the boundary around you be made of?
Once you have completed the image, take time to reflect. It is important to allow yourself space to process what you have created. Sit with your thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself about the images or objects you included. What do the images and colors you used represent?
